Rev. Morris A. Baker
Morris Augusta Baker was born in Jackson, Tennessee March 19, 1947, to the union of the late Augusta Baker Jr. and Jennie Mae (Baker) Rhodes. He has four brothers, Albert, Alexander, Jerry (deceased) James and Danny, and two sisters, Debra and Diane.
Morris became a Christian at an early age and joined the Pleasant Hill Chapel Reformed Church. He later moved his membership to the Bethlehem Baptist Church where Rev. R.L. Johnson is Pastor. It was there that he was baptized. He left the church at the age of 16 to have what he called “FUN.” This “fun” lasted for 16 years.
In 1980 Morris joined The Prince Of Peace Missionary Baptist Church where the late Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon was Pastor. He served on the deacon staff for four years, but God had a greater work for him to do. After playing the role of Jonah for such a long time, Morris finally accepted the call into the Ministry. He studied under the late Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon, Pastor Bruce Garmon’s father. Dr. Garmon was a very powerful teacher and preacher who loved his work, loved to learn, and made sure that all those under him learned as well. Morris has worked with Pastor Bruce Garmon for a number of years, even before he was a pastor. Between Pastor Bruce E. Garmon Sr. and Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon, Morris has gained a great deal of knowledge.
Morris is married to a very sweet woman named Jewel Ann (McClenton) Baker. They started out as just friends, but later found themselves falling in love. After nearly three years of dating they were married on January 21, 1983. They have faced many hardships through the years, but by the grace of God, they have hung in there. Morris and Jewel have four children; Lynn L. Baker of St. Petersburg, Florida, Joelouvouis (Joe) McClenton of Indianapolis, Indiana, Janae M. (McClenton) Langston of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Morlesha J. Baker, who resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her parents.
